Reflection

Last Friday, we had the last presentation about animal fur. We established imaginary NGO "L&L" which protect animal rights. After the presentation, we got many comments by our classmates, so I will talk about them.

Everyone listened to our presentation seriously and they seemed to understand L&L.
Most of them said,
"I wanna join your NGO because it is easy to join"
"I want to join because I want to know more about animal furs"
I was so happy to hear these voices because L&L's target is young people especially students,
so the fact that classmates are interested in L&L means that we could achieve our purpose.
And also, we don't force them to join radical strikes or demonstration toward the people
who buy animal furs for their fashion, that point might be the key to success to catch the young people's mind.

We made a promotional video about animal furs and classmates said,
"That's interesting!"
" Easy to understand your NGO"
I was glad to hear that because we took the video about 10 times!!!!!
It was sooooooo hard!!!!! I was satisfied with the video because audience said, " That's nice!"

One classmate said, " If I join L&L, I can argue it with more extensive view because animal fur problem is big problem and which is related to eco-terrorism.
Before reading this comment, I did not notice that Animal fur problem is so controvercial.
However, we can argue and develop this problem in L&L because there are many animal rights problem in the world like eco-terrorism. If you join L&L, you can know about animal fur problem and get the chance to think about eco-terrorism and other animal right's problem.

I hope more and more people to get knowledge about how animals are killed and how cruel animal farms are through joinning L&L.
We want people to notice that we should not buy animal furs and expand the information and knowledge about them to their friends.
If the number of animals which is killed would decrease, we are so happy.

A Description About Our NGO

The name of our NGO is L&L, which is stands for "Love animals, let them Live peacefully." Our mission statement is "We make people, especially young, know about animal furs throughout our small activities." We will be working hard to make people know about the issue of animal furs and eventually, we hope we can eliminate the cruelty toward animals. Holding seminars including activities with special guests at universities, appealing fake furs so that people can realise the attractiveness of fake furs, and donation, will be our basic activities to achieve those goals of ours. The points where we are different from other NGOs are here.

1. We focus on the activities for STUDENTS.
2. Our activities are rather EASY to participate in.
3. People can get BASIC knowledge about animal furs.

We will give out leaflets to make media interested in our activities, and we will also advertise at universities at their school fes.

Many of classmates said that they were interested in the issue, and wanted to join us. Some of them even said about what they think about the cruelty toward animals, including their feelings. I'm really glad see those comments from my classmates.

The Survey Results

To make a presentation about animal rights and animal furs, we got much information through survey monkey.
I'll show you the datas we got.

Many people cooperated with the survey, and most of them were the same age as us, about 19,20,21 years old. Also, over half of them were female and more than half of answerer did not have animals as pets.
Almost all people seemed to have interests in the issue of animal furs. This was important information for us to produce a NGO, because there is no meaning of the existence of our NGO if people don't have it.

About 60% thought rabbits are kept for their fur and fox and raccoon are the same proportion, 13%.  It might be said that the impression that fur materials are made from small animals with fur might be strong. Next, about the way to keep the animals. Answerers thought animals are kept by cage and bait.  These are certain ways to keep them without hurting.

Do you know the existence of fur farms? To this question, about 70% of answerers don’t know it. Some animals are born to be sacrificed for their fur. Also, it is not common information among people that many fur products are mislabeled. I did not know those information, as well until I researched on this issue. We thought it was important to let people, especially young people, know the truth of a issues of animals.

Almost answerers thought fur products are being produced in China and Africa. America was a minority view. Many clothes are made in China, so I think the impression of it leads to this results. Also, they got the information by television and the Internet. Some web sites about animal fur put some images and movies which is very shocking, so you should prepare mentally to see it.

Above 75% of them have fake furs and they are satisfied with them. But some people said they wanted real fur because it keeps them warm and is cuter, cooler and softer than fake furs. It seems they regard qualities as important things when they choose fur materials

93% know the term “animal right”, but about 40% don’t know the meaning of it. The term eans "the rights of animals, claimed on ehical grounds, to the same humane treatment and protection from exploitation and abuse that are accorded to humans" (quoted from http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/animal+rights)

About 80% thought animals have same rights as humans. I was surprised about 20% of them don’t think animals have same rights as humans. Also,a number of people who know some NGOs dealing with animal rights were small. They know PETA, ALF and greenpeace.

These are the results of our survey. It is hard to know the issue of animal rights and animal furs because there is no oppotunity to know it, even thought people use the Internet. However, I think people can do it to think animals have same rights as us and live as us...

Podcast about animal fur

I searched a podcast about animal fur, the title is "Alec Baldwin Anti-fur".
This podcast is from PETA's point of view, they are against killing animals for their furs.
There are many ways to express fashion, fur is one of them.
For fashion of human, every year, many animals are taken  from the wild and taken to the fur farms and they are killed. They are forced to stay in narrow cage, treated cruelly.
PETA wants to reduce the number of animals which have to die for human egoism.
There are many artificial furs in the world, so people can wear them to express their fashon and no animals would be killed.

Ethical Reasoning

I found a site that is good to explain the term "ethical reasoning". It is the official website of an organization claims animal rights, PETA.
PETA Official Site

I think the website provides us information from the perspective of respecting animal rights, as they say on the top of the site. Respecting animal rights, not regarding them as humans', is a good example of ethical reasoning. Because it has the perspective based on if the thing is right or wrong, which is define the term "ethical reasoning". This organization has many ethical reasoning sentences or claims on the website, so please check them out.

Podcast about the Fur Trade

I found a podcast about animal furs.

The title of the podcast is "Driving the Fur Trade Out of Ireland: Laura Broxson of the National Animal Rights Association", and this podcast was made by ANIMAL VOICES in Feb 19, 2013. This organization is an animal liberation radio show broadcasting in Toronto.

This podcast expresses the fur trade out of Ireland. Ireland banned fur farms once, but they changed suddeny. NARA, National Animal Rights Assocation, is preparing to convince store to stop sellimg furs and to convice the city council to ban fur sales for its profits. Also, they go to countryside which has mink farms to pressure the owner of it to quit produce furs.

ANIMAL VOICES sends us message related to animals. You can understand animals' real by searching the organization like it.

A web site with ethical reasoning

I found a web site which shows ethical reasoning about animal furs.

http://www.wspa-international.org/helping/animalfriendlyliving/does-ethical-green-fur-exist.aspx

In the first article in this web site,  it is showed that animal fur is not "ethical", and  animals are in  weak position and "morally indefensible" againt human.

"fur is never ‘ethical’ and it is never ‘green’"
The headline of this web site "Does 'ethical' or 'green' fur exist?" is impressive. This headline asks us that if there are exact fur existences on the planet, or not, because there is no certain proof to find out which animal's fur and which counties animals were in. It is easy to shift a right information to wrong one.
Also, this web site shoews that consumers buying furs and the people who are involved furs in their job are try to use or wear animlal furs as humane and environmentally friendly product. It is people's ego. They do not know the fact of animals' death. It is not allowed to admit this behavior ethical.

 "morally indefensible"
Aniamals are caught. It is hard for them to escape from attacks from humane because human have many kinds of tools. Animals are morally indefensible and catching them is contrary to moral.

Most of animals are smaller and weaker than us.
It is ethically and morally wrong to catch them and end their lives for our luxury.

a website with ethical reasoning

I searched a website which shows ethical reasoning about animal fur.
This site says that we should not deprive the animal's right.
If we see this site, we can understand killing animals are ethically and morally wrong.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/animals/rights/introduction.shtml

Please read this sentence in the site.
"Animal rights supporters believe that it is morally wrong to use or exploit animals in any way and that human beings should not do so."

"morally wrong"
There is no practical reason why it is wrong, and this is moral claim.
From these words, we can know that killing animals is bad is a social norm.

"human being should not do so"
These words reccomend us not to use or exploit animals because it is not  right thing to do.
Animal lovers blieve that human should not kill animals blindly and originally.
However, we can't understand why it is not right.

Maybe animal lovers can't explain why killing animals is wrong logically and they can't persuade us
because this is ethically wrong.

Podcast about Animal Rights

I found a podcast that focuses on our controversial issue, animal furs.

It's "The PETA Practical Guide to Animal Rights", made by PETA, an organization claiming animal rights. The podcast focuses mainly on animal rights, including the speaker's own episode about being a vegetarian, and about saving a dog bullied by some people. It has the part that introduces us about the history of thought of animal rights, about the current situation of animal fur trade, and brief explanation about animal rights. It gives us an encouragement to think about animal rights, especially on the topic of animal furs. You can learn and think about the issue listening to this podcast, rather easily because it has many interesting episode of the speaker, and so you'll be able to imagine the situation well. Try finding the podcast!

a website which appeal to emotion

I found a website which "appeal to emotion"

http://www.petaasiapacific.com/feature-chinese-furfarms.asp

People in normal life would not know how fur farms are managed, how animals are killed to skin and how furs are supplied to consumers, like us. Fur lovers don't care about it, I think, because there is no opportunity to know fur problem through their normal life. However, after you watching this website, your thought of fur problem might change.

These expressions would affect on our minds...
" in outdoor wire cages, exposed to driving rain, freezing nights, and scorching sun"
"often kill their babies after delivering litters"

These expressions make it possible for us to obtain information  and to understand about animals with furs' miserable lives. It is a so sad facts that babies are killed for human's desire, even though they have no sin to be skinned and killed.

These words which appeal to human's emotion can change their minds, and they would not buy fur items one after another.

a website which appeals to emotion

I searched a website which appeals to our emotion about animal fur.

http://www.peta2.com/actions/chinese-fur-farms/

Ordinary people might not know how animals are killed in fur farms, so most of the people think fur problem is not so serious.
However, if you look at this website, your idea about animal fur will change because some kind of expression appeal to your emotion.
For example, "still alive and struggling desperately"
"still had enough strengthen to lift his blooded head and stare into the camera"

Thanks to these expressions, people can imagine that the animals try hard to live after they are skinned. You can also know how workers treat animals cruelly even if they try to resist and appeal to live more.

These "" words make people to change their mind that we should not kill animals for furs because they are grieved by these words.

Illustrating "Appeal to Emotion"

I found a website that illustrates ‘appeal to emotion’

This site provides us many messages and slogans about fur trade, and it is useful when we try to know what kinds of opinions others have toward fur trade. However, I think it gives us too much information by the way of appealing to our emotions. For example, it has no specific numbers or data about fur trade and animals for that, and uses many words to appeal to our emotions, like ‘hurt’ or ‘cruel’. Using these words may be effective to make people who don’t have any knowledge about fur trade be interested in the issue, but is not useful for the people who want to know the detail of the issue. When providing information on certain kinds of issues, especially in this case, fur trade, it is important to give us some emotional appeal and this site shows us well the way of appealing to emotion, I think.

An Example of Bad Website

I found a website that may be considered not good.
Here: Game of Thrones

The website has a strong opinion toward fur products but I thought they are too much because they mentioned directly the name of certain organization and said bad toward that organization.

The website has contact page for us to reach for more information, but we cannot know whether the information they provide is true or not, since they give us more emotional one, than that based on certain truth. We cannot know about the author or publisher, and I think reliability of websites is important for us, so in terms of reliability, the website won't be said to be really a good one.

Good Website about animal furs

Hello! I found a good website about animal furs which is " Vegan Peace".

www.veganpeace.com/

Author:
Wanda Embar who is a vegan in Netherland set up this website in order to appeal that we should protect animal's right. She studied mathematics at the iniversity of Leiden. She recommend people to become vegan because being vgan can protect the lives of animals.

Publisher:
This website is sponsoring the author's page. Their mission is to abolishanimal industry that abuses and exploits animals. If you click " Contact me", you can get in touch with Wanda Embar.

Objectivity:
Of course, author's perspective is to save animal's right. In the page of "Fur", she show the reality of animals in fur farms with cruel pictures. We can understand how animals are skinned alive. She only show the actuality, so there is no exxageration.

Links from:
There are many links about animal right, for example, animal right blog, vegan recipes, etc...
These link support author's idea that we should not kill animals for our lives and they worked.

Date: I could not find the date of publication. Date the docment has reliability because in the webpage, recent things are written.

Accuracy:
The facts are correct and verified because the same things about suffering animals are written in the site of PETA which is the organization to protect animal's right.
Author's conclusion follows the fact that many animals are suffering from exploit.
There is no spelling miss.

Evidence:
In the page og "Fur", there are some links about furs and they support the author's opinion that we should not kill animals for furs or food. We can feedback the author about " Vegan Peace" at the pabge of "Contact me".

Links to:
There are many different site about animal's right.
They are reliable because all sites have information about publisher of the websites.
Those links have the same perspective to author.

Evaluation to a web page

I found a web site "Against Fur Zombies "

Author:  There is noinformation about the author, but he/she says that "I like my animal friends alive"

Publisher:  No information about it

Objectivity:  The author of this web site present a limited perspective on the topic. It seems that the author argue this topic more emotionally than rationally, but  there is no extreme or exaggerated language.

Links From:  There is no links to other web sites.

Date:  No information of a date of publication of this web site.

Accuracy:  It is not sure that the facts in the web page are correct because there is no supporting evidences or other web sites, and it seems this web site is managed by an individial, not by an organization.

Evidence:  The author of this web site does not use other web pages as a evidence to support his/her claims. There is no way to contact the author or publisher.

Links To:  There is no web sites link to this web page.

According to the information above, it is hard to say this web site is good. There are few information about the purpose of this web site, who is the author and so on...

Also, there is no other supporting web sites to this web site. So, it is difficult to use  it as an evidence of showing the present situation of animal furs. Moreover, there is no pictures, as well. The readers of the web site would not feel a seriousness of this problem.

Therefore, it is hard to say that this site is a good one.

An Example of Good Website

I found a website that  is good for getting information about our issue, animal rights.
Here: PETA's official site

First, the mission of this organization is very clear , that is, to campaign to establish a society where the rights of individual animals to be respected. It provides us opinions and information about animal rights from many perspectives such as: animals for eating, for clothing, for experimentation, and for entertainment. They are trying to appeal more on our emotions by using pictures and videos of animals.

Importantly, this site is very reliable I think because they show us concrete numbers or data about issues related with animals, without exaggerating. Also, I could find many other sources that provide same information as this website, and considering the fact that this organization is official, the information it provides should be accurate.

It has both email address and phone number for us to report the cruelty of animals, or to get more information about the organization. They even provide us a section that we can look through frequent-asked questions and answers for them.

From these facts about the site, we can consider it a good one.

Animal Furs from valious perspective - a lover of fur

The following are profiles of one lover who really loves animal furs. It is sure that there are people who show that their status are high, are pride of it and are privately glad of differences from general people. However, they may be serach about animal furs and find themselves they have wrong information. I used these sites mainly to get information:

Hello. I am one of lover of animal furs. I really love them. I have some fur coats, fur hats and fur mufflers, but I want more. Animal furs are a symbol of wealth. If I wear them, I look like a strikingly beautiful woman. These make me so gorgeous.

Of course, I know animals are killed for us to make fur stuff, but these are a part of my life. I cannot think there is no fur stuff in the world. I cannot imagine I don’t wear furs and look like a general woman like others.

By the way, I’ve heard there are fur farms. At first, I thought these farms are for lovers of fur like us, but when I found a movie which shows that animal is flayed as it is living. I was shocked. I had thought they are flayed after they killed before watching it. I was wrong, but I cannot change my conception that furs make me so beautiful, I cannot keep from buying fur stuff. So, I think all I can do for animals is using fur stuff lovingly and with thanks.

Opinion of fur providers

The folloing is the perspective toward fur trade, seeing from a person who works at a fur farm in China. This is the side that support the existence of fur farms and the people who work for that. I used mainly these sites to get factual informations about it.

   The Chinese Fur Industry

Chinese Industry

"I am working as a fur provider at a fur farm in China. You may think it is a kind of cruel job, and I know that there is the side that criticize and blame fur trade, and the people who work for that. But we, people who produce animals in a fur farm, get fur from them, measure and cut the fur to make fur products, do have reasons for doing that as our job. For example in my country, China, the largest exporter of fur products, there have been a great development in economy so it made people's life more industrialised. People there became to spend money on their fashion more, like fur products. If there are people who need them, there must be people who provide them. Also, it's better for the people who want fur products that the products are as cheap as possible.
This is why animals are being killed for their fur in the country. We will lose our way to live, if we lose our job. There should be an appropriate process to change the fur trade system so that workers for that would not be in trouble. It's not only responsibility of us that animals are being killed. We are also being in severe situations where we become mentally ill, or physically dangerous. To stop fur trade, you have to change the mind of people who want and buy the products."

Animal Furs from diverse viewpoint-PETA's viewpoint

The following are profiles of organization which have unique perspectives on the animal fur’s issue. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is the organization which try to protect animal’s right. Their perspective is that killing animals for their furs should not be allowed. I have written in their voice. I used factual information from this article:

http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-clothing/fur.aspx
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=oxVwsA2MLWA

I am a member of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. We are called PETA. We are the largest group which support the right of animals established in 1980 in Virginia in United States.

I disagree with killing animals for their furs. Tremendous numbers of animals are sacrificed for fur coat, decoration and so on. I want to protect their lives. Can you imagine how animals are killed in fur farms? Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available, for example, beating them with the club tipped with metal hooks and beating them on the ground. I am grieved to imagine that animals are suffering from bleeding without any resistance. I think that people who buy furs for their fashion don’t think animal’s feelings. They never imagine how animals are suffering from unbearable pain when they are skinned alive. If people think these kind of things before buying furs, they will hesitate to buy furs.

In order to protect animal’s lives, we don’t want you to buy animal furs. If you really want to wear furs, you can buy cruelty-free fabrics and artificial furs in stores everywhere. We continue to work with designers and clothing retailers to encourage people to use and sell only animal-friendly fabrics. I hope more and more people never support this cruel practice by refusing to buy any fur products.

We tell you about the controversial issue we have chosen, "Saving Wildlife". Actually over 40 million animals are being killed annually only for their furs. The largest exporter of furs in the world is China, and actually in this country there is no law that bans killing animals for their furs. People are discussing on this issue mainly from two different sides, one that we can kill animals to take furs especially when the animals are ill or bad condition and to be die, and another that we don't have any rights to kill animals so it's only a cruel thing killing animals for their furs. A discussion like this, you can see it for example on this site. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/4603032.stm

We summarised a report about the hunting and furs of snow leopard, one of the least studied mammals in the world. Snow leopards are live mainly in Central Asia, for example China, India, Mongolia. The species is being hunted and taken furs nationally and internationally through the countries. About 50 to 90% of them were caught and being lost. There are almost no laws toward the problem in those countries so to stop hunting and selling snow leopards is very difficult. There are some activities that help the species to breed, by taking them into a zoo. It is difficult but important to take action to save the species from its extinction. You can read the report on this website. http://www.snowleopardnetwork.org/bibliography/Dexel_2002.pdf

There are many more sources we used to search for the information on this issue. This is the official website of WWF. http://www.wwf.sg/what_we_do/stop_illegal_wildlife_trade/
And here, this is the site you can reach many radio and podcast channels.
http://www.abcnewsradioonline.com/business-news/new-york-department-store-accused-of-illegal-fur-labeling.html
We want you to know and think about the problem of animal furs, especially whether we can kill animals for their furs when they are dying or we cannot do that in any situation, through the sites.
